When a man experiences occasional erectile failures there is nothing to worry about. But when the problem persists, it is absolutely necessary to see a specialist like urologist. Experts in sexual health can diagnose and treat erectile dysfunction.

Various treatment options are available for men today. Proper estimation of sexual health is done before starting any therapy.

Typically, the program of treatment of erectile dysfunction includes the use of certain medicines, getting blood sugar level, blood pressure under control, reducing the number of cigarettes or getting rid of smoking, and other important steps on the way to better health.

Since erectile dysfunction can be an early sign of other serious health disorders, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, it is required to address it to the specialist. There is no need to be embarrassed about impotence, it is very common and can be explained by various reasons such as absence of physical activity, unhealthy diet, abuse of alcohol or medicines, poor control over general health and having different health disorders.

A doctor can explain the various treatment options available for erectile dysfunction and give proper treatment recommendations for individual specific situation.

There are several types of treatment options for impotence. The first-line therapy commonly chosen for practically all men is a non-operative method which involves taking oral medicines called PDE5 inhibitors, such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.

The other common treatments may include testosterone replacement therapy, use of vacuum devices, psychotherapy.

The second-line therapy is known as injectable treatments such as penile injections caverject, or special medications inserted into the urethra.

Finally a person can opt for surgical treatments which are known as the third –line therapy and include: penile prosthesis and vascular surgery.

Medication therapy or the first-line therapy is very effective in enhancing the quality of man’s erection satisfactory for intercourse. Still not all men respond to the oral medicines. Men with neurologic disorders, diabetes, traumas of the spinal cord can find these medicines ineffective due to very serious damages of the nerves in their bodies. These men should try other methods of erectile dysfunction treatment such as external devices, self-injection therapy, vacuum pumps and urethral systems.

For those who respond well to oral treatments for erectile dysfunction the best way is to start using any of the available drugs. There are three mainly used medicines approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction: Viagra, Levitra and Cialis.

These medicines are so-called pioneers in the field of erectile dysfunction treatment. They all work the same way – by increasing blood flow to the penis to produce an erection. There is a strict taboo for these medicines – they must never be used with nitroglycerin pills for heart disease or chest pain.

Penile injection is the other treatment option for men. Alprostadil is an FDA-approved erectile dysfunction drug that can be injected directly into the penis to produce a strong erection. The side effects related to injections can include very serious ones like priapism, allergic reactions, scaring and skin reactions.

The medicine known as muse reminds Alprostadil in its action, but is administered differently. It is a pellet inserted into the urethra. Inside, the pellet dissolves and produces the necessary erection.
